Marriott International announced on 27 October the opening of The Cape Town EDITION, the first hotel of the EDITION brand in Africa. The hotel has 142 rooms and suites and stands on Quay 7 of the V&A Waterfront, facing Table Mountain.
A building made by hand
The interiors are by Neri&Hu, the Shanghai design studio, working with South African professionals. The façades are clad in more than six million hand-laid bricks. At the centre of the building, a cylindrical space called The Drum leads by a spiral staircase to a public observation deck.
The signature suites include a Penthouse of 240 square metres and a Harbour Suite of 112 square metres. The art collection was put together with Design Network Africa and Southern Guild.
Dining, the rooftop and the team
Leonie Andereya is general manager. Executive chef Phil Carmichael leads the kitchens, with Shale as the main restaurant and EAVE on the roof, a restaurant, bar and terrace with a heated pool. The hotel also has a Lobby Bar, a Punch Room for shared cocktails and a Pool Terrace, with George Hunter as beverage partner.
The spa has five treatment rooms and a couples' suite, and a flexible event space can hold up to 200 guests. The owner, the investment and the exact opening date were not disclosed.
The signal
Cape Town is drawing the lifestyle-luxury brands that long stopped at Europe and the Gulf. A brand built on design, nightlife and food is now betting on the city's year-round appeal, not only on the southern summer. For hoteliers in the city, the bar for rooftop dining and design-led rooms has just moved.
Congratulations to Leonie Andereya and the opening team.
